International Women’s Day

Today, we acknowledged International Women’s Day. The Government of Canada’s theme for International Women’s Day (IWD) 2024 is Invest in women: Accelerate progress. Through our individual actions, we can collectively help to create a gender equal world. This year’s theme is a reminder that gender equality is one of the most effective ways to build healthier, more prosperous, and more inclusive communities.

Ramadan

This year, Ramadan is expected to begin in the evening on Sunday, March 10, 2024 and end on Tuesday, April 9, 2024. Ramadan is a holy month of fasting and contemplation for people of the Muslim faith. Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is referred to in the Qu’ran as a blessed month in which the teachings of the Qu’ran were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.

During Ramadan, many Muslims fast during the hours of daylight and increase their focus on prayer and contemplation. At the end of each day the fast is traditionally ended with a prayer and a light meal called the iftar.

Ramadan is considered a time for Muslims to recommit themselves to cultivating spiritual renewal within themselves and their communities, as well as practicing compassion and generosity for others.

During lunch, as an option for  Muslim students, a quiet, comfortable space away from food sources for students who are fasting will be provided. Students can come to the office and see Ms. Anand and Ms. Trim if this is something that they would like to take advantage of and we will let them know where this space is located.

Ramadan Mubarak to staff, students, parents and members of Muslim communities who will be observing Ramadan.

Student Leadership – March Focus is Breathwork

The student leadership team has worked hard to prepare resources for the staff and students at Lincoln Alexander around their March focus of breathwork.  The goal for well-being this year at LAPS is to develop common language and strategies to self-regulate when our mind or body is feeling dysregulated.  The team has created posters, bulletin boards, announcements and a slide deck with videos to teach the LAPS community a variety of breathwork strategies including square breathing, triangle breathing and five finger breathing.  There are a long list of benefits of using breathwork, such as helping our body and mind to feel calmer, it improves our mood and helps us to focus. Check out the links if you’d like to use these strategies at home!

School Immunization

If your child needs vaccines, such as those required by law to attend school in Ontario, York Region Public Health provides free student catch-up immunizations to all eligible students in JK to Grade 12 by appointment only. It’s also important that you report your child’s vaccination to York Region Public Health. Please read this important message from York Region Public Health on vaccinations.

High Seas Musical Production

After months of rehearsals, our High Seas cast and crew were able to showcase their hard work and talent for four audiences.  Thank you to all of the students, families and community members who came to the evening performances to support our students and staff.  The students also performed for the Primary Division from Ashton Meadows P.S. and our own LAPS students during matinee performances on Wednesday and Friday.

A huge thank you is extended to all of the staff who supported the musical and put in countless hours of their own time to ensure a wonderful experience for all. From set design and creation to lighting and sound, to costumes, to choreography, to promotion and communication, and of course, the rehearsals to help students learn the lines and songs for the production – it truly did take a village to ensure the success of this year’s musical.

We are SO very proud of our students and staff (including all of our students who supported by being a great audience). Congratulations!

Congratulations to our Robotics Team

Last week our Robotics Team attended the York Region Skills Challenge at Humber College. They returned to LAPS with a Second Place finish in both robotics and TV/Video. We are very proud of our students and thank Mrs. Hopper for her support in preparing them for this event.

Upcoming Caring and Safe Schools Mid-Year Presentations

To support and promote positive student behaviour, students will attend the Caring and Safe Schools Mid-Year Presentations this week at LAPS. These presentations underscore behaviour expectations as we create a caring, safe, and inclusive school environment. As families are critical partners, please continue discussing school safety at home by asking your child what they have learned in the Caring and Safe Schools Mid-Year Presentation.

Presentation topics include:

  • YRDSB and School Code of Conduct (including items that are not to be brought to school)
  • Staying safe online
  • Progressive discipline, and
  • Standing up for each other, including methods of reporting incidents of racism, discrimination and bullying.

Promoting Behaviour

In the Mid-Year Presentation, students learn about following the YRDSB and the School Code of Conduct. Instances of anti-Black racism, other forms of racism, discrimination and bullying are not acceptable and are addressed through progressive discipline. In some cases of racism and discrimination, York Regional Police may be involved.

Students will also be reminded about safe school behaviours, including what items must never be brought to school, such as peanut products, vape products/drug paraphernalia, weapons/replica weapons and knives/replica knives.

Reporting Behaviour

Standing up for one another and reporting when something does not feel safe is part of a caring and safe school environment. Students should report incidents that make them or others feel unsafe or uncomfortable, including acts of racism, discrimination and bullying. Students can report incidents by:

  • Telling a caring adult;
  • Using the YRDSB’s “Report It Button” (Located on our school’s website, the online Report It button allows students and families to share information about inappropriate behaviour and incidents of hate or discrimination. Please see this video for additional information);
  • Contacting Kids Help Phone (1-800-668-6868).

Mental Health

We will stress the importance of connection to students as we continue the school year. Students are learning about who they can talk to if they need support. In addition, positive mental health is closely tied to each individual’s sense of identity and safety. As such, mental health initiatives are aligned with equity and safety in mind, which includes culturally specific supports. YRDSB student mental health services are delivered by Board social work and psychology staff. These services are accessible through the school principal. Mental health resources for families are also available on the Board website.

Student Discipline

We use a progressive discipline approach for inappropriate behaviour on and off school property. This means we consider various options to determine the most appropriate response to each situation to help students learn from their choices. In some cases, suspension or expulsion may be necessary. The Ontario Education Act and the Board’s Caring and Safe Schools Policy (found on the Board’s Caring and Safe School Page) outline situations where suspension and expulsion must be considered. These infractions are also outlined in the Guide to the School Year. In addition, when inappropriate behaviour occurs, information will be shared with the student(s) who were harmed and the families of the student(s) who were harmed to the extent that legislation allows.

Tobacco/Alcohol/Drug-Free Environment

The use of tobacco, electronic products (such as vaping, electronic cigarettes and related products) and student possession of alcohol/illegal and restricted drugs, including cannabis, are prohibited on school property or within 20 metres of school boundaries. This complies with the Smoke-Free Ontario Act, enforced locally by York Region Community and Health Services. A progressive form of discipline may apply, including suspension from school and fines (up to $5,000). In accordance with the Smoke-Free Ontario Act (SFOA), exceptions are made for the traditional use of tobacco that forms part of Indigenous culture and spirituality.

Online Safety and Appropriate Use of Technology

Students are reminded about the Appropriate Use of Technology agreement, including the importance of using respectful language and making positive choices when using electronic communications and social media tools. This agreement is also included in the start-up package that all families receive at the beginning of the year.

Students are reminded that online threats and comments are taken seriously and may have consequences, including potential criminal charges. Where there are concerns for the safety of students, staff, community members or Board property, the school board works with York Regional Police and appropriate actions are taken. The safety and well-being of students remain our top priority.

For More Information

For more details on these items, please read the Guide to the School Year or visit the Caring and Safe Schools section on the YRDSB website for more information and to access family resources to continue these conversations at home.

Thank you for helping us create a caring, safe, and inclusive school community.

Make it Sow Fundraiser (from your School Council)

Dear LAPS Families,

The LAPS School Council is pleased to announce that we are kicking off the Make It Sow fundraiser program. This fundraiser was a success in 2022. We hope to continue that forward with this eco-friendly program.

Make It Sow is a Canadian company supplying high-quality garden and flower seeds and greenhouse starter kits. They do not use any GMO seeds and only use proven species developed for Canadian climates. They back up all their products with a 100% quality guarantee. We are excited about this program as it fosters a culture of conservation in the community while yielding a profitable return for our school.

The program is simple. Anyone who is considering planting a vegetable or flower garden (large or small!) can purchase a variety of seeds through their online website. A portion of the funds will be returned directly to the school. This year, we are looking to use the funds for acquiring new tablets, laptops, and grade 8 graduation.

The program will be running from today until March 17, 2024.

Attached is a brochure with all the different seeds available, ranging from flowers to vegetables, even herbs.

TO ORDER:

SEEDS DELIVERY:

The cut off date for this fundraiser is March 17, 2024. After that, with in a two-week period *, the school will receive the seeds, and they will be sent home with your child. * Subject to change depending on processing and delivery times beyond our control from the distributor.

Lastly, Make It Sow has a bonus PLANT A TREE program.

For every ten master packages we sell, one tree will be planted on our behalf.

Now is a good time to tell neighbours, friends and relatives who want to grow flowers or gardens this spring about our new fundraiser. Any of these products will make a great gift.

Happy Growing,

The Lincoln Store punch cards are ready for those who ordered them on SchoolCash Online! Thank you to Mrs. Hopper for taking the time to create and distribute the cards. February is Winter Walk Month!

Tips for Winter Walking

Walking to school in winter not only benefits student physical and mental health, well-being and academic performance, it’s also fun.

Here are a few tips to help you stay safe and enjoy winter walks to school.

  1. Dress for the weather. Wear layers. Don’t forget your hat and mitts.
  2. Protect your feet. Wear warm socks and winter boots. They will protect your feet from snow, rain and cold and have good grips.
  3. Be visible. Wear bright clothes, stay on the sidewalks and make sure cars can see you when you cross the road.
  4. Allow a little more time. Prepare your winter gear the night before, and give yourself a little more time to walk to school.
  5. Try walking like a penguin. It’s fun and practical.
  6. Enjoy the snow. Catch snowflakes, talk about what you love most about the winter.
  7. Obey road signs. The seasons change but road safety rules remain. Stop at roads and crosswalks. Cross with a crossing guard where possible. Look out for cars.

Use active travel wherever possible. We encourage families all year round wherever possible to take the school bus or school transportation, or to choose active travel, like walking or biking. Active school travel benefits student mental health, well-being and academic performance, builds social connections and reduces traffic and pollution around schools.

It’s never too early to start to teach road safety. Your child will become a safe, responsible and independent pedestrian by experience and practice. Starting them as young as kindergarten will equip them with the skills they need to walk on their own in all seasons at an earlier age.

If you are driving, please follow road rules. Remember that our school zones are busy with students and families. It is important that we all follow the rules to ensure student safety.

  • Use the kiss and ride. Do not use dedicated bus lanes.
  • Consider parking near the school and walking the rest of the way (obeying all neighbourhood parking rules).
  • Obey all speed limits and road traffic signs in school zones.
  • Focus on the road and watch for crossing guards and students crossing the road.

Working together, we can all help to keep students safe. For more information about how you can help to create a safe school transportation zone, please visit our website

Message from our Trustee – February 2024

As we start the second semester and second half of the school year, I want to take this opportunity to share some updates about upcoming dates, events and initiatives taking place across our system with you. I also want to thank everyone who contributes to building a strong educational community in York Region District School Board – the students, families, staff members and community partners who come together in support of student learning, achievement and well-being.

February is Black History Month. In addition to a number of events taking place within the school board and local community, the school board is once again Celebrating Black Excellence through its Black Voices campaign. Black Voices aims to centre and celebrate the Black members of our YRDSB community and share their voices. For families looking to learn more about school board and community events and programs for Black students and families, you can subscribe to the Centre for Black Student Excellence mailing list to receive regular updates.

Later this month, we will also recognize the Lunar New Year and wish all students, staff and community celebrating Lunar New Year a happy and joyful celebration.

While we have seen milder winter weather this year, I also want to remind families that we have protocols in place for severe weather and school transportation cancellation in the case of inclement weather, and want to ensure families are aware. You can find more information on the Board website. We also continue to encourage families to use active school travel all year round, including during the winter months. Early in February, we will be celebrating Winter Walk Day, and be sharing tips as well as the benefits and joys of winter walking.

This month, students in Grades 5-12 will have an opportunity to vote in the Student Trustee Elections. I want to congratulate and thank all of the students in Grade 10 and 11 who applied for this position. Student Trustees play an important role representing student voice at the Board meetings and we greatly value their voice and contributions. Students who are eligible to vote will receive information in their GAPPS accounts about how to vote. This is a great opportunity to participate in the democratic process and to have their say about who will represent their voice in the next school year.

Kindergarten and French Immersion registration opened in January for fall 2024. For students looking at course selection in secondary school, there are lots of great resources available at www.yrdsb.ca/experience-yrdsb that let students learn more about courses, programs and opportunities that relate to their interests.

You can also stay up-to-date with what’s happening around the Board by visiting our newsroom – some of the latest stories feature schools in our area, or by listening to the Board’s award-winning podcast Tune In YRDSB, including recent and upcoming episodes on what to expect in Kindergarten, how Student Trustees represent student voice, Tamil Heritage Month, Hindu Heritage Month and more.

As the governing body of the York Region District School Board, trustees are required to establish an annual Multi-Year Strategic Plan (MYSP) to guide system direction for a four-year period. The MYSP is a reflection of emergent priorities identified by our educational communities. Over the coming months, we will be conducting extensive consultations with YRDSB students, staff, families and community members to collect input and feedback to develop our revised MYSP. We look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for all that you do to partner with us in building a strong publicly funded education system that delivers a high-quality education for your children. You can learn more about my role as a school trustee and how you can reach me on the Board website www.yrdsb.ca

Lincoln Alexander Day

January 21 is Lincoln Alexander Day. In a statement from Minister Khera, Minister of Diversity, Inclusion and Persons with Disabilities today, we are reminded that Lincoln Alexander Day is, ”a day in honour of an extraordinary man of law who left an indelible mark on Canadian history. His contributions and legacy have been instrumental in shaping the diverse and inclusive Canada we know today.

The Honourable Lincoln MacCauley Alexander was Canada’s first Black Member of Parliament and Cabinet Minister. His unwavering advocacy for Black Canadians and commitment to promoting equity through social justice, education, race relations and youth issues make him a role model for present and future generations.

Throughout his life, he also paved the way for the advancement and equality of Canadians from all backgrounds. As a trailblazer, he used his voice and platform to defend the rights and interests of marginalized communities, tirelessly working to promote inclusion by breaking down racial and ethnocultural barriers.

Lincoln Alexander Day is an opportunity for Canadians across the country to commemorate the accomplishments of this remarkable politician and Canadian Army Corporal who improved representation of racialized people both within government institutions and beyond. It is also a time to pay tribute to all those who have fought and continue to fight for a fairer, more equitable Canada.”

 (retrieved from https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-heritage/news/2024/01/statement-by-minister-khera-on-lincoln-alexander-day.html )

Fun facts: The Honorable Lincoln Alexander sat in our LAPS library and gym when our school building opened in the 2005-2006 school year. Also, Ms. Trim received her B.A. Sc. degree from the Honorable Lincoln Alexander when she graduated from the University of Guelph as he was the Chancellor of the University at the time.

Weather Watch:

All students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 are expected to go out for every recess unless the Principal or Vice Principal decides that weather conditions are so poor that it would be detrimental for them to be outdoors. Students are to come to school ready for winter and prepared to be outdoors up to 40 minutes after lunch. We always monitor the weather and, in extreme conditions e.g. wind chill; we keep the students indoors or shorten the recess breaks.

We often receive requests from parents asking us to keep their children indoors during recess times because they are not feeling well. Unfortunately, we do not have the staff or facilities to supervise students who are sick or still recovering from an illness. Students with heavy colds, etc., which are serious enough to prevent them from participating in physical education, recesses or other outdoor activities, should remain at home until their condition improves. This will likely benefit the students concerned and prevent the spread of this illness to others.

Please make sure that your children are dressed properly for our invigorating winter days. It is advisable for students to bring extra pants and socks. A change is often necessary due to the wet and cold weather of the winter months. To avoid adding to our clothing collection in the Lost and Found, please be sure to label all articles of clothing. You can take advantage of our Mabel’s Labels campaign to help with this. Boots, hats, mitts/gloves, scarves, and snow pants for the younger children will help make recess an enjoyable time.

School Reminders:

  1. students should not be arriving prior to 8:15am since there is NO supervision

  6. please do NOT send your child to school if they are sick or feeling unwell
  7. students should not be bringing sports equipment from home to play with at recess (e.g., basketballs – the school has equipment that the students are able to use. Please note that for safety reasons, students are not allowed to use balls outside during tarmac only recesses.

January is Tamil Heritage Month

The following is taken from https://tamilheritagemonth.com/about-us/  :

Tamil Heritage Month, started in 2010, aims to celebrate the history of Canada’s Tamil community and its contribution to the social, cultural, political and economic strength of Canada. While recognizing our accomplishments and tracing our roots, Tamil Heritage Month will provide opportunities to celebrate Tamils’ history in Canada as well. In addition, this month will actively celebrate Tamil heritage and rejuvenate Tamil culture in Canada.

The objectives of the Tamil Heritage Month are five-fold:

  1. To celebrate the richness of the Tamil language and literature
  2. To celebrate the traditions, arts, and culture of Tamils around the world
  3. To educate Canadians of all backgrounds about the language, traditions and history of the Tamil people
  4. To highlight the achievements of Tamils in various fields both in the past and the present
  5. To advance the growth and prosperity of Tamils

The month of January was chosen as the Tamil Heritage Month for a number of reasons. The Pongal festival, the most important and widely-celebrated festival amongst Tamils around the world, falls in the middle of the month. Pongal is both a time of thanksgiving for the blessings of a past year and a time to look forward to the start of a new year. The first month of the Tamil calendar, Thai, begins in the middle of January.
